The Lighter in Phasmophobia is useful to light Candles and to light Smudge sticks. If you are lighting an object on the ground or on a table, you need to turn the lighter on and then use it on the object. If you are using it to light Candles or Smudge Sticks in your hand, simply select the Smudge Stick or Light and Press F (Default Use Key) and it will light the Smudge Stick or Candle.
The lighter is almost completely useless as a light source.
